Harness Your Body's Natural Healing Potential

Regenerative medicine focuses on supporting the body's ability to repair damaged tissues and optimize healing.

At NY Spine & Sport, we utilize advanced orthobiologic therapies including Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC), and cellular therapies to address orthopedic injuries and degenerative conditions. These therapies are commonly used for osteoarthritis, tendon injuries, ligament injuries, meniscal tears, and spine-related conditions.

ADVANCED ORTHOPEDIC BONE MARROW CELL THERAPY FOR KNEE AND OTHER JOINT ARTHRITIS:

Osteoarthritis is more than just cartilage wear and tear. Modern research has demonstrated that osteoarthritis is a whole-joint disease involving inflammation of the synovium, changes within the subchondral bone, cartilage degeneration, and progressive loss of joint function.

One of the most important advances in regenerative orthopedics has been the recognition that the subchondral bone—the layer of bone directly beneath the cartilage—plays a critical role in the development and progression of knee arthritis.

Autologous Bone Marrow Cell Therapy utilizes your body's own regenerative cells obtained from bone marrow, typically harvested from the pelvis through a minimally invasive aspiration procedure. The concentrated bone marrow aspirate contains a rich mixture of progenitor cells, growth factors, cytokines, and biologically active signaling molecules that may help modulate inflammation and support the body's natural healing response.

Unlike traditional injections that focus solely on the joint space, advanced regenerative techniques may target both the arthritic joint and the underlying subchondral bone. This dual-target approach is based on growing scientific evidence suggesting that abnormalities within the subchondral bone contribute significantly to pain, inflammation, and ongoing cartilage deterioration.

In a landmark study published by Dr. Philippe Hernigou and colleagues, patients with knee osteoarthritis treated with bone marrow concentrate injections into both the joint and subchondral bone demonstrated significant improvements in pain and function. Imaging studies from Hernigou's group have also shown evidence of improved subchondral bone health and structural changes within the joint over time. While individual outcomes vary and no treatment can guarantee cartilage regeneration, these findings have helped establish regenerative cell therapy as one of the most promising biologic approaches for joint preservation.

We utilize advanced image-guided techniques to precisely deliver biologic therapies to the areas of greatest pathology. Our goal is not simply to mask symptoms, but to address the underlying inflammatory and degenerative processes that contribute to joint aging and osteoarthritis progression.

Potential Benefits of Bone Marrow Cell Therapy:

  • Reduced joint pain and stiffness
  • Improved physical function and mobility
  • Modulation of joint inflammation
  • Support of subchondral bone health
  • Potential slowing of degenerative joint changes
  • Minimally invasive alternative for appropriate patients seeking to delay or avoid joint replacement surgery

Every patient undergoes a comprehensive evaluation including advanced imaging, biomechanical assessment, and regenerative medicine consultation to determine whether bone marrow cell therapy is an appropriate treatment option.

WHY TREAT THE BONE BENEATH THE CARTILAGE?

For decades, osteoarthritis was viewed primarily as a disease of cartilage loss. Today, research shows that important changes occur much earlier within the subchondral bone—the living tissue that supports the cartilage surface.

As subchondral bone becomes inflamed and structurally abnormal, mechanical forces within the knee change. This altered environment can contribute to synovitis, bone marrow lesions, cartilage breakdown, and worsening pain. Studies from Hernigou and other investigators suggest that addressing these subchondral bone abnormalities with targeted biologic therapies may help interrupt this degenerative cycle.

This evolving understanding has led to the development of intraosseous regenerative procedures, in which biologic therapies are delivered directly into areas of diseased bone under image guidance. By treating both the joint and the supporting bone beneath it, physicians can address osteoarthritis from a more comprehensive, whole-joint perspective.
